Malaysia beats neighbours to K-pop awards.
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia beat two other countries in the region
to host the Samsung Galaxy 27th Golden Disk Awards (GDA), the event’s organiser
said. Mediartncomm Co Ltd Director Seo Nak-Won said Malaysia was chosen because
of its growing reputation as an international host.
Founded in 1986 and referred to as the Grammy Awards of
Korea, the GDA is South Korea’s most prestigious K-pop music awards show and is
presented annually for outstanding achievement in the music industry. The
awards will be held at the Sepang International Circuit and will bring along
the top Hallyu acts in the music scene.
“Malaysia has been pushing not only in tourism but also as
the preferred destination for meetings, incentives, conventions, exhibitions
and major events. The hosting of the event will be timely and will further
enhance its profile as the host for major events. The Malaysia Convention and
Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) has been very supportive in assisting us in hosting
this event,” Seo said.
Seo said most of the Korean artists are also keen to come to
Malaysia due to its diverse and unique cultures as well as strong support by
Malaysian fans for the Korean music industry. Besides that, Malaysia has the
most K-pop fans in South-East Asia, thus wooing the organiser into hosting the
prestigious event as a “gift” to the loyal and supportive fans.
“We’ve so far invested about RM11.4 mil in terms of venue,
on advertisements and promotions. This will be the biggest South Korean music
festival ever organised in Malaysia,” he said. So far, Malaysia is the second
country after Japan to host the GDA outside South Korea.
Seo said the difference between the GDA hosted in Japan and
Malaysia is that this event will either take on a music festival / party theme
for two days where only standing tickets are available for sale as opposed to the
one held in Japan where audience had allocated seats.
Tickets for the Samsung GALAXY zone (RM999) and Hallyu Zone
(RM199) are currently available for sale. All tickets for the Rockpit zone
(RM688) have sold out.
To date, 25 K-pop stars have confirmed their attendance for
the event which will be held on Jan 15 and 16. Among the top artistes attending
are G-Dragon, the leader of Big Bang, CNBlue, T-ARA, Super Junior, Beast and
many more.
Hosted by Mediartncomm Co Ltd, the event is also supported
by MyCEB and presented by Samsung Malaysia Electronics as title sponsor. - Bernama
