Date: 27 December 2012

Two restaurants received first “HALAL” certification in Macau.

Today two restaurants in Macau became the first in the city to be “halal” certified, namely Taste of India and Red Chili. The two restaurants were inspected and certified by Hong Kong based mufti (Islamic chief) Muhammad Arshad.

The “halal” certification ensures that food preparation and ingredients are according with the Islamic law.

“It is a very important certification for the Islamic community, as now whenever we go to a restaurant without it we either eat cheese or turn vegetarian”, says Macau Islamic community member Omar Jr.

He believes that more restaurants in Macau might follow Taste of India and Red Chili footsteps and become “halal certified”, which would benefit local Muslims as well as visiting ones. Omar Jr. estimates that around 3.000 Muslims pass by Macau coming from mainly from Hong Kong and mainland.

The two restaurants also offer a praying area for Muslims.
