Malaysia – 10th most friendly city!

Date: 29 October 2012

Malaysia – 10th most friendly city!

According to a HSBC Expat Explorer Survey, Malaysia is the 10th friendliest country in the world.

The report, carried by Forbes Online, states our “satisfying social life, easy local travel and better housing” as desirable traits for expatriates.

For these expats, Malaysia is seen as an ideal launching pad for career-driven individuals who view our country as more of a temporary base with a relatively comfortable standard of living.

Kevin O’Beirne, a 32 year old sales consultant from Boston, has been living in Malaysia for two years, and agrees with the sentiments of the survey, quoting Kuala Lumpur’s convenient location as one of the more notable pluses.

“Being located in Kuala Lumpur, it is really easy to fly to other countries cheaply and quickly. Plus, the air is a lot fresher here compared to Bangkok or Shanghai” he says.

Fiona Oon, a luxury marketing executive, who comes from a mixed English-Malaysian parentage, also agrees that there is an appeal to the Malaysian lifestyle that some other Asian countries may not have.

“Kuala Lumpur has everything a big city can offer but you don’t feel like you’re stuck in a rat race, the pace of life is a lot more chilled here,” she says.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak took to his Twitter account to praise the article, writing, “We welcome the world!”

The tweet subsequently prompted 594 re-tweets as of Monday afternoon.

Along with Malaysia, other countries featured were Australia (2nd), United Kingdom (3rd) and Canada (4th).

The Cayman Islands was voted as the winning country, mainly for its no income tax, tropical weather and low crime rate.

Interestingly enough, Malaysia was the only Asian country featured in the top ten rankings, outpacing our ASEAN neighbours Singapore and Thailand.

However, the survey also found that many of these foreigners had difficulty adjusting to our local community due to the language barrier.

KL ranked No. 2 in shopping in Asia Pacific.

Date: 28 October 2012

KL ranked No. 2 in shopping in Asia Pacific.

PETALING JAYA: Kuala Lumpur is the second best shopping city in Asia Pacific, according to the latest Globe Shopper Index, cementing its position as a shopping paradise. Twenty-five cities in the region were assessed under five categories shops; culture and climate; hotels and transport; affordability; and convenience.

Kuala Lumpur achieved the second highest overall score of 65 out of 100. Only Hong Kong scored higher 68.5 edging other cities for its safety, dependable city transport and variety of shops and brands. Shanghai was third with a 63.1 score with Beijing placed fourth at 60.7.

Singapore (60.2) and Bangkok (57.1) were ranked fifth and seventh respectively. The other big cities ranked included Sydney (58.4), Tokyo (56.4) and Seoul (54.8).

“Kuala Lumpur's specific strength is its ability to combine low prices with a good range of products in a large number of stores, including three of the world's 10 biggest shopping malls,” the index report stated.

The report predicted that Kuala Lumpur had the potential to perform better in future indexes due to the Government's efforts to promote retail tourism. It also took note of the Government's mammoth investments in developing KLCC and Bukit Bintang as a “premier shopping precinct in Malaysia”.

Bukit Bintang-KLCC Tourism Association chairman Joyce Yap welcomed the report, saying the Government's decision to make shopping a focus in the Economic Transformation Plan was a key factor.

The Globe Shopper Index was created by the Economist Intelligence Unit, which is part of the Economist Group and founded as an in-house research unit for The Economist newspaper and commissioned by Switzerland-based shopping tourism company Global Blue.

Watney wins CIMB Classic, Tiger finishes tied for fourth.

KUALA LUMPUR: Nick Watney came close to pulling off a 59 en route to pulling off a magnificent CIMB Classic victory, closing with a bogey for a course-record 10-under 61 at the Mines Resort and Golf Club on Sunday.

Watney needed a birdie on the par-four 18th for a 59 but drove his ball into the left rough, failed to reach the green with his approach and left his birdie pitch just short of the putting surface.

The American was still all smiles as he finished at 22-under 262 and earned the winner's purse of US1.3mil in the process.

Defending champion Bo Van Pelt and Robert Garrigus tied for second, a stroke back.

Needing a birdie on 18th to force a playoff, Van Pelt saved par for a 66. Garrigus also finished with a 66.

Tiger Woods also came back strongly on the final day to shoot a 63 to tie for fourth at 19-under with Chris Kirk and Zimbabwe's Brendon de Jonge. Kirk shot 67 while de Jonge had a 66.

Watney won the FedEx Cup opener at Bethpage Black in August for his fifth PGA Tour victory and thus continues the winning streak for the Americans.

Ben Crane was the inaugural winner in 2010 and was tied for 14th on 14-under this time.

Putrajaya wants to be a tourist hot spot.

Putrajaya wants to be a tourist hot spot.

EXPERIENCE PUTRAJAYA PROGRAMME: Corporation sets target of five million locals to visit administrative capital next year

PUTRAJAYA: PUTRAJAYA Corporation (PPj) has targeted five million domestic tourists to visit the federal administrative capital next year under its Experience Putrajaya Programme (AL1P). The programme's objective is to bring those who have never come here for a tour and to appreciate its beauty.

Launched yesterday by Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin and PPj president Tan Sri Aseh Che Mat, the programme also involved about 440 people residing in the People's Housing Project in Lembah Pantai being taken on a tour here in Nadi Putra buses.

Among the spots they visited were Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Mosque, Seri Perdana Complex, Putra Boulevard and Botanical Gardens.

Raja Nong Chik said the programme not only promoted Putrajaya, but would also generate income for the traders here.

"Aside from promoting Putrajaya in the tourism sector, PPj can also help traders as there are not many visitors to the capital even during the weekends. It is hoped that the programme would enable the traders to earn extra income."

He also said although two million tourists visited the capital here this year, it was not something to shout about. "Putrajaya was only a passageway for them and they did not stay long. Hopefully, with AL1P, visitors will be encouraged to stay longer."

Programme participant Tan Kuan Eia, 57, said it was his first time visiting here. "I never had the opportunity to visit. But with the introduction of this programme, I am able to see Putrajaya with my own eyes. AL1P must be introduced to everyone because it showcases the beauty of the capital."

Those who are interested in AL1P can apply by calling 03-88877350, or email to nazt@ppj.gov.my. The tour will be held every Wednesday to Sunday and the time slots available are from 9.30am to 12.30pm, or 2.00pm to 5.00pm.

In a related development, the Tourism Ministry is encouraging more domestic travels among Malaysians to further boost the sector. Deputy Tourism Minister Datuk Dr James Dawos Mamit yesterday urged tour operators to come up with more packages to cater to local tourists. "By coming up with more packages, tour operators will be able to attract more tourists both locals and foreigners," he said in his speech at the flagging off of the Cuti-Cuti 1Malaysia MotoGP Ride 2012 convoy here.

About 150 riders from various motorcycle clubs took part in the convoy travelling to the Sepang International Circuit for the Motorcycle Grand Prix (MotoGP) 2012 race. The convoy was a collaboration between Malaysian Motorcycle Getaways and Tourism Malaysia. Participants received MotoGP grandstand tickets, selected hotels and homestay discount vouchers, refreshments and merchandise. Mamit said motor sports, such as the MotoGP, had the potential to generate income for the country.

He also said Malaysia recorded 131 million domestic tourist arrivals last year. They spent RM43.3 billion.

Terengganu Tourism Association To Work With Hotels, Resort Operators

KUALA TERENGGANU, Oct 19 (Bernama) -- The Terengganu State Tourism Association (PPNT) will cooperate with hotels or state tourism agencies to boost tourism in the state, said its chairman, Wan Supian Wan Ishak.

He said the effort was necessary to grow existing tourist attractions to increase the number of tourist arrivals in the state in conjunction with the Visit Terengganu Year 2013.

"For example, the Sungai Terengganu river cruise at Payang Walk, Kuala Terengganu, is the latest tourist attraction in the state.

"PPNT, as the body tasked with promoting such activities, is calling on all interested tourism agencies to call us for further discussion," he told reporters after a dinner cruise with the media and bloggers on board a traditional boat on the Sungai Terengganu yesterday.
